On December 1986, gateball was introduced to Hong Kong from Japan. Evergreen Gateball Association was established in 1987, this is the first gateball association at Hong Kong. Until March 1992, Evergreen Gateball Association was formally registered as the " Hong Kong Gateball Association " and become a member of the  " Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China" in August 1993 and the Association was received as a member of the Would Gateball Union and Asian Gateball Union on 30th September, 1998.

       Gateball sports has remarkable development in Hong Kong in the past decade and  has become  a popular sports in recent year. Since its establishment in 1992, the Hong Kong Gateball Association has spared its efforts in promoting gateball sport in the territory.

       In April 1997, as to celebrate the memorable occasion, the Tenth Anniversary of Gateball Development in Hong Kong, and to further promote the development of gateball sports in Asia, the Hong Kong Gateball Association organised the " Asian Cities Gateball Invitation Championship 1997 ". 64 teams of about 500 gateball players from China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong participated in the competition, it gave local gateball players and fans an opportunity for enjoyment of high-level competitions, and a great stride had also been made in the development of gateball sports in Hong Kong.
